Серж Генсбур Люсьен Иосифович Гинзбург родился 2 апреля 1928 года в Париже, в еврейской семье Иосифа Гинзбурга (1898—1971) и Ольги (Брохи Годы) Бессман (1894—1985) — выходцев из Харькова и Крыма. Родственники Гинзбурга по отцовской линии жили в Феодосии. Иосиф и Ольга Гинзбурги познакомились во время учения в Петербургской консерватории. Отец был пианистом и композитором, мать - певицей. Семья перед революцией жила в Феодосии и покинула Россию в 1919 году; сначала переехав в Стамбул, затем в Париж. В семье Гинзбургов было пятеро детей: Марсель, Камилла, Жаклин и близнецы Лилиан и Люсьен.
